in defense secretary leon panetta has asked that general john allen's nomination to be supreme commander put on hold. for patreaus, panetta asked whether any kags that his affair started when he was still in active duty. >> we obviously are going to watch this closely to determine just exactly you know when that took place. but i think right now my view is, let's see what the investigation turns up and what the congress, these committees are able to determine as to what exactly took place. >> so a friend of general patreaus says the affair starts two months after he took over as cia director and ended about four months ago. four days after the patreaus scandal broke, investigators are trying gather information. what we saw agents searching paula broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, the woman involved in the affair with patreaus. fbi spokeswoman would not say what they were actually looking for but you can see they're taking stuff out. seeing the agents carrying boxes and items out of her home last night. it's clear the scandal as it grows could have far-reaching implications. i wan

with jill, leon panetta delivered new comments on the scandal hours ago. is the defense department at the tip of the investigation and what's the latest here? >> well, we'll get to that vote of confidence by mr. panetta in a second, but really the main thing that seems to be now clear is exactly how this unraveled. and it all has to do with tampa where, of course, u.s. central command is located and jill kelley, whom you just saw there, she was involved as a volunteer. she's no diplomatic protection whatsoever, but she was involved as a volunteer dealing with international visitors in the military apparently. so she in this capacity gets to know general petraeus and also general allen. so he gets an e-mail, she gets e-mails. he warns her that he's getting these e-mails, this is jill kelley. and jill kelley goes to the fbi and that is how this all unravels. now, speaking of general allen, he, of course, is the top u.s. and nato commander in afghanistan. he was nominated as the supreme allied commander in europe. and that nomination is on hold. but secretary panetta said that they ha

contact between general john allen, and jill kelley. yesterday, secretary panetta asked that john kelley -- or john allen's nomination to be the head of nato be pulled back and put on hold while the inspector general starts to dig through all of these pages to find out exactly what happened. here's how it all connects. general john allen was stationed in tampa when he was at u.s. central command. so was general david petraeus. jill kelley worked as sort of a social liaison with a lot of the commanders there. in fact, she's been -- won awards for her work with some of the military families, and the military down there. now, paula broadwell started e-mailing jill kelley. and from what we know, some of those e-mails basically took the tone of, you know, stay away from david petraeus, sort of, i know sort of your relationship with some of these other generals, it's inappropriate. at the time it didn't make sense. because what we've been told is, david petraeus and jill kelley are family friends. that david petraeus and his wife holly have spent time with jill kelley and her husband. that the

secretary leon panetta told reporters do not jump to conclusions here. he says he still has confidence in general allen to command the u.s. forces and continue the fight in afghanistan. well, just in to us. earlier we were tell you it's expected that general petraeus, david petraeus would testify at some point before congress. well, four we have gotten definitive word. we now know that he will, indeed, testify before congress this friday, that is the plan, just in to fox news moments ago. well, as we reported earlier this hour, president obama today defended his plan to allow some the bush era tax cuts to expire for the wealthiest americans. they are all going to expire. and if someone doesn't want them to, the president has a veto pen. so really that's it. in a news conference, the president said he is still willing to compromise with republicans. >> i have been encouraged over the past week to hear republic after republic agree on the need for more revenue from the wealthiest measures as part of our arithmetic if we are going to be serious about reducing the deficit. >> shepard: reme

lilg healthing hillary rodham clinton and leon panetta both expected to depart. likewise, the president might have to find replacement for treasury secretary timothy geithner and attorney general eric holder if they decide that they, too, would like to leave. toipt bring in our white house correspondent briana keiller to talk about just more on the president's plate here. how does this add to what he needs to get done starting in the next year? >> it really adds to it. i mean, you've got this issue, obviously, that comes after any re-election. the turnover of the cabinet, suzanne, but just think of the big plate that this is being added to. first offer, the fiscal cliff. that is obviously the biggest issue that president obama has to deal with. you're looking at tax cuts that expire at the very end of december, and then those spending cuts that are set to kick in on january 2nd. as he works, obviously, figuring out the new faces on his cabinet. he has his anything raugs on january 20th, and february is a big month as well. he needs to summit a budget at the beginning of the month. it's

on replacing the cia director. he's got to probably replace hillary clinton at state. leon panetta at defense. as he starts to move pieces around, maybe as attorney general, the president demands two things when you think about these big appointments. diversity and excellence. and now, replacing his cia director is going to have to be part of that mix, to get a national security seem that can work really well together, general petraeus had a mixed reputation on that score. some people in the pentagon, in the intelligence community, resented him a little bit. he's a superstar. and superstars in any high pressure field are going to have some people questioning are they team players? there was some of that. but he did perform at a very high level. one of the most excellent people in his profession in the last 100 years. they need to find somebody to replace him. >> is there a political fallout from this? whether it's for the president, or for any others in washington? >> i think the most likely political fallout could relate to benghazi. there's still this question, one of the things that goes o
